The Budleigh Fund today

The League of Friends of Budleigh Salterton Hospital is now known as 'The Budleigh Fund'. The fund is a registered charity [REG NO. 1028245] and until recently has been primarily concerned with supporting Seachange in the former hospital building. As this organisation has continued to grow and to become more self sufficient as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in its own right, the Fund is now in a position to offer grants to other suitable local applicants.

The fund is managed by eleven trustees which includes a chairman and treasurer.

The trustees come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide mix of age and gender. They meet quarterly, have additional financial meetings and an AGM which members can attend. Members receive regular updates on the charity’s work and anyone interested in joining can find out more here
about membership

TBF Trustees

The trustees set the strategy for the charity and direct how it is managed, and take ultimate responsibility for its governance. Specialist knowledge is not required but trustees should bring a fresh perspective and common sense to the role and act with reasonable care and skill.

The trustees are expected to:
  • Act in the charity’s best interests.
  • Manage resources responsibly.
  • Ensure the charity is accountable.
  • Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit.
  • Comply with the charity’s constitution and the law.

Who we are

Dr Steve Ross
Retired Exmouth GP and trustee of The Budleigh Fund since 2021. I have lived in Budleigh since 1994 and I am married with two daughters, a dog and a campervan. I have a season ticket at Exeter City FC, I am an active member of Devon Birds and was Mens Captain at East Devon Golf Club for 2023.

Dr David Evans
We have been privileged to live in Budleigh Salterton for 55years. I thoroughly enjoyed working as a GP here, and was Chairman  of the Health Centre  Charity when the Medical Centre was renovated. At the same time I was Chairman  of the League of Friends of Budleigh Salterton Community Hospital before it was completely renovated  to the high standard that it is now.

Mr Ian Christie
Ian is a Chartered Accountant, with more than 30 years professional experience, and is currently employed in the corporate finance team of one of the large accounting firms.  He has lived with his family in Budleigh Salterton since 2015. Ian is the honorary treasurer of the Budleigh Fund and is also a trustee of Seachange.

Mrs Kaye Bentley
Kaye moved with her family to Budleigh Salterton when she was 4 years old, attending the local primary and secondary schools. She studied at Kings College London and after University moved back to East Devon living in Woodbury before moving back to Budleigh Salterton. After leaving University Kaye joined the NHS graduate financial management training scheme, holding a number of finance posts in the NHS at local, regional and national level before retiring in 2022 from her final role as the NHS England Director of Finance for the South West region.

Mrs Mary Brooks
My husband and I moved to Budleigh Salterton in 2014. We had previously lived in Northamptonshire. I worked for Oxfordshire libraries for many years, latterly as the Library Systems Officer. This involved training staff to use the library computer system, testing updates before they were made live and helping set up and then testing the libraries website from a user point of view.

Mrs Susan Gebbie
I moved to Devon in 2000 with my family and chose Budleigh as a fabulous place to live.  Apart from a few years abroad, we have lived here ever since and have enjoyed being part of a growing community. I draw on my background is sales and marketing when working with The Budleigh Fund to contribute ideas and creativity and am interested in finding innovative ways of achieving our goals.

Dr Richard Mejzner
I moved to Budleigh Salterton in 1994 with my family and was very fortunate to practice as a GP at our Medical Centre and look after patients in the former Budleigh Salterton Hospital. I stepped down in 2020 but still work clinically, I am predominately involved in training medical students and the appraisal process for GP colleagues. I was very involved, along with Dr David Evans and our former chairman Chris Davis in the transition from hospital to the new integrated health and wellbeing hub 'Seachange'.

Mrs Jackie Collins
My name is Jackie Collins. I had a Senior Human Resource background in large Pharmaceutical Companies for some time. When I retired I wanted to do something that (I hope) suited my skills. I became a trustee for a charity and was then voted in for Chairperson. Since then I have had three trusteeships, the latter with League of Friends/The Budleigh Fund.

Mrs Marilyn Hobbs
I represent the village of East Budleigh where I have been living with my husband for 12 years since I retired as a solicitor and moved to Devon.

Maxine Else
I moved to Budleigh in 2002 with my extended family and have worked in house sales for 35 years. I am  currently with David Rhys and Co where I have been since 2010.  I appreciate how lucky we are to enjoy all that beautiful Budleigh and the surrounding areas have to offer and am never more happy than when walking the cliff tops.
